Valença, also known as Valença do Minho, is a Portuguese border city located in the Alto Minho sub-region, belonging to the North region and the district of Viana do Castelo.
It is the seat of the municipality of Valença, which has an urban area of 9.49 km2[1], in a total of 117.13 km2, subdivided into 11 parishes, and 13,625 inhabitants in 2021[2] with a population density of 116 inhabitants per km2.[3]
The municipality is bordered to the east by the municipality of Monção, to the south by Paredes de Coura, to the west by Vila Nova de Cerveira and to the northwest and north by the Spanish region of Galicia.
The highest point in the municipality is Alto da Recosta/Lagoas, at an altitude of 782 meters.
It received a charter from D. Sancho I, and was then called Contrasta. It changed to its current name in 1262. It is sometimes called Valença do Minho.
It was elevated to city status on June 12, 2009[4].
