- Fátima
Located 130 km from Lisbon, Fátima, also known as the "City of Peace", is the most important Marian shrine in Portugal and one of the best known worldwide. Between 1916 and 1917, in a climate of war and unrest at the beginning of the 20th century and the First World War, three children tending their flocks in Cova da Iria experienced manifestations of the Mother of God and an angel. Our Lady's apparitions took place on the 13th day of each month between May and October 1917. There, her great message of peace was transmitted to the world by the three children through faith and devotion to Our Lady and the prayer of the Rosary. Several thousand people witnessed the incredible "Miracle of the Sun" during Our Lady's last apparition on October 13, 1917.
The Chapel of the Apparitions was erected precisely on this sacred site and houses the image of Our Lady of Fatima. In the large square that surrounds it, there is the Basilica with the tombs of the three travelers and the new Church of the Holy Trinity. Several popes visited Fátima throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. In 2017, one hundred years after the first apparition, Pope Francis canonized Jacinta and Francisco, two of the Fatima travellers.
- Leiria Castle
There is no reliable information about the early human occupation of the castle site, although the Leiria region is rich in prehistoric and Roman archaeological evidence.
It is known that at the time of the Christian Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, the region was, in the 12th century, a nerve center for the defense of the southern border of the Condado Portucalense. It became a prosperous medieval economic center, thanks to the trade in cereals and food products (wheat, olive oil, wine, fruit), wood (Leiria pine forest), minerals (iron, coal, rock salt, limestone) and handicrafts (wool and weaving, leather, pottery, ironwork).
- Batalha Monastery
It was built in 1386 by King João I of Portugal in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for his victory against his Castilian rivals in the Battle of Aljubarrota.[4] This monastery of the Order of St. Dominic was built over two centuries until around 1563, during the reign of seven kings of Portugal, although the first Dominican friars had lived there since 1388.
An example of late Portuguese Gothic architecture, or Manueline style, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and on July 7, 2007, it was chosen as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.[5] It has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.[6] It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Since 2016, it has had the status of a National Pantheon.[7]
The Monastery of Batalha is one of the most visited monuments in Portugal. In 2022, it registered 288,386 entries.
- Nazaré
Nazaré, called by many the World Surfing Sanctuary, is a Portuguese municipality in the Oeste region and district of Leiria. It is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Silver Coast, with beautiful beaches.
- Óbidos
It was taken from the Moors in 1148 and received its first charter in 1195, under the reign of King Sancho I. Óbidos was part of the dowry of numerous queens of Portugal, including D. Urraca of Castile (wife of D. Afonso II), Queen Santa Isabel (wife of D. Dinis), D. Filipa de Lencastre (wife of D. João I), D. Leonor of Aragon (wife of D. Duarte), D. Leonor of Avis (wife of D. João II), among others.
It was from Óbidos that the municipality of Caldas da Rainha was born, previously called Caldas de Óbidos (the change of name was due to the seasons Queen Leonor spent there).
